A Very Merry Un-Birthday to You...

We celebrated very belated February birthdays at Gigi's house on Saturday.  We missed quite a few of our crew, and we thought about them as we munched on brownies and ice cream.

Unsolicited Advice from an Uncool Mommy of Three

I put on my brakes as we descended the hill and my blinker as I turned off of the highway onto the perpendicular four-lane road. And just as I braked at the yield sign, waiting for a clearing to merge into traffic, a blue BMW zipped past me into the left lane of traffic at a high speed. I was in disbelief. This guy couldn't have known whether I was about to accelerate onto the road, and had he misjudged we certainly would have had quite a wreck.

I waited my turn and merged into traffic. As I drove for a few minutes, I realized that I was approaching a red light. And who sat, stopped, at that red light? Why, the blue BMW of course. For all of his hurry, he hadn't made it very far.  As my minivan pulled up in the lane next to him, I looked--stared, really--incredulously at the young man who was checking out his reflection in the rearview mirror. He looked back, and I impulsively rolled down my window. I asked him in my best Mom-voice, "Are you the person who just passed me at that intersection?" He paused and responded affirmatively. He was "just trying to get in the other lane." "Well," I smiled condescendingly, "I didn't think it was very safe, and I have kids in my car." I waited while he squirmed for a second and stammered an "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..."

Satisfied, I didn't wait for him to finish the excuse. I just smiled again, said "It's ok," and rolled up my window. Blessedly, the light changed and I pulled off--cautiously--in my day-care-bound van.  Wondering exactly what had gotten into me back there.

The lessons here: I am now old, uncool, and apparently feeling sassy. Drivers beware.

Happy Spring!

Today could not possibly have been any prettier.  So, we broke out our springwear (with sweaters, just to be on the safe side) and enjoyed a gorgeous afternoon on our patio after church.

Belated Birthday Get-Together

Mama Pat and Grandaddy were out of town for B's big party, so we had a little get-together at their house Saturday afternoon.  To commemorate the occasion, Brooks took his first steps!!  And did so repeatedly, once he realized that walking garnered applause from his audience.  He enjoyed being the center of attention for the second time in one week!

A Pair of Star-Crossed Lovers

Movin' On Up

Brooks has promoted himself out of the baby room at church.  When I picked him up last week, one of the girls told me that he really seems to prefer the "big kid" room (which can consist of everyone who can walk up to age 4 sometimes).  I laughed and thought that was cute.

And then tonight when I took him in I saw what she meant.  He completely lost it when I took him into the nursery.  Buried his head into my shoulder and sobbed big crocodile tears.  After several unsuccessful attempts to calm him down, the same nursery worker grinned and said, "Watch this."  She took him from me, still sobbing, and walked across the hall.  The very instant that they entered the big kid nursery room, he stopped crying.  She sat him down in the middle of the floor, big kids running all around him, and he just grinned and soaked it in.

She asked if it was ok if they left him with the big kids tonight, and not wanting him to spend the rest of the night distraught, I of course said yes.   When I went to get him after choir practice, I went into the big kid room where his sisters were, and there he sat, in a high chair, smack dab in the middle of the room.  Happy as a lark.

Savvy Shopping

Hallie (riding in B's new car):  I'm going to the store.
Julie:  Will you buy me some cheese?
Hallie:  It's not on sale.

Staking Her Claim

Jason:  Sara, why do you have to make such a mess in my house?
Sara (scowling):  It's my house too!
